Hojicha

Roasted green tea leaves that produce a warm, nutty flavor with gentle energy.

Origin

Hojicha was developed in Kyoto, Japan in the 1920s when tea merchants began roasting bancha (common green tea) leaves over charcoal. The roasting process was originally created to make use of leftover tea leaves and stems, but the resulting brew became beloved for its distinctive toasty flavor and low caffeine content.

Traditional use

In Japan, hojicha is often served after meals to aid digestion and as a calming evening beverage. Its mild nature makes it suitable for children and those sensitive to caffeine. It's also traditionally served during meditation practices

Modern usage

Studies have shown that the roasting process reduces caffeine by up to 90% while preserving beneficial polyphenols. Research published in the Journal of Nutritional Science found that L-theanine in hojicha promotes alpha brain wave activity, associated with relaxation.

Butterfly Pea Flower

Origin

Clitoria ternatea, known as butterfly pea flower, has been used for centuries across Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In Thai cuisine, it's called 'dok anchan' and has been used to naturally color desserts and drinks for generations. In Ayurvedic medicine, it's known as 'Shankhpushpi.'

Traditional use

Traditionally used across Asia to enhance memory, treat anxiety, and support eye health. In Thai culture, it's consumed as 'nam dok anchan' and believed to promote lustrous hair and clear skin. Malaysian tradition uses it to ease pain and reduce fever.

Modern usage

A 2019 study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that butterfly pea extract significantly improved memory and spatial learning in animal models. The anthocyanins have been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier, directly supporting neurological health.
