Best Nighttime Routine for Skin Repair

Skin repair isn't constant — it's concentrated overnight, when cell turnover increases and blood flow to the skin rises. A nighttime routine should work with that biology, not against it.

1. Start winding down before your skincare does. Cortisol needs time to taper off before bed. Dimming lights and stepping away from screens 30–60 minutes before sleep supports this — skincare products can't compensate for a nervous system that's still in "on" mode.

2. Cleanse to actually remove the day, not just habit. Double cleansing (oil-based, then water-based) if you wear sunscreen or makeup ensures product buildup isn't sitting on skin overnight interfering with repair.

3. Layer actives with the night in mind. Retinoids, in particular, work with the skin's natural overnight renewal cycle and are best used at night both for repair synergy and because they increase sun sensitivity.

4. Don't skip the moisture barrier step. Overnight repair relies on the skin barrier functioning well — a barrier-support moisturizer or facial oil helps lock in whatever actives you've applied.

5. Support the process internally, not just topically. What's happening inside your body overnight matters as much as what's on your skin. A calming, low-caffeine evening ritual — something like butterfly pea tea, which has no stimulant load to fight against your wind-down — signals to your body that repair mode is next, not another jolt of alertness.

Nighttime skincare works best as one piece of a larger wind-down system, not a routine bolted onto a still-wired brain and body.
